In addition to M.J. Gardner's work with high school students in her current position with the University of Washington's Upward Bound Program, she has more than ten years of experience teaching in higher education. She's participated in outstanding programs, working directly with her pupils. Their collaborative efforts have created captivating and motivational pieces included on program and class websites, reaching a broad audience and making an impact.

Creative Writing 101:
University of Washington Upward Bound Program
Summer Academy 2021- 2023

Miranda developed a Creative Writing 101 course for the UW Upward Bound Program in 2021. The class is still taught by her today! Over six weeks, students explore a range of writing genres, such as haiku, short stories, and song and movie reviews. Covered topics include self-pride, horror, culture, and romance. Under Miranda's guidance, the best student pieces are featured on the program website (also developed by her) and displayed at an end-of-summer event, promoting creativity and recognizing diversity of thought.

Umoja English 101
Highline College 2017

Miranda collaborated with the English and Communication Departments to incorporate the Umoja programs, focusing on African American students' cultural and intellectual enrichment. English 101 students read Mamie Till-Mobley's book, "Death of Innocence," and watched the documentary series "Eyes on the Prize" to learn about the African American Civil Rights Movement. Their body of work included poetry, scholarly essays, and reviews of movies and books. Miranda also designed their online portfolio's website, showcasing their best and most influential pieces. As part of a community presentation, Miranda interviewed students to highlight their ideas and creative processes.
